July 31-August 6, 2016 – New England Fiber Arts Retreat at Medomak

Come join us for a week of fiber-filled fun in beautiful Washington, Maine. Whether you knit, crochet, spin, felt, dye, or weave, or if you’ve always wanted to learn how, this is the place for you! Enjoy the company of fellow fiber enthusiasts while you spin by the fireplace or knit in rocking chairs on the porch of our lodge. Collect natural dyestuffs around camp and dye your own yarn and fiber. Most of all, relax and enjoy the beauty and magic of Medomak.

0309151505a~2Intro to Mushroom & Lichen Dyeing with Alissa Allen

Learn about fungal ecology as we look for dye fungi and lichens growing at camp. We will talk about habitat, substrate, and anatomy for identification purposes; ethical harvest practices; and field testing. We will follow up with dye tests back at camp and or larger scale dyeing if we hit the jackpot.

Class Length:  3 hours

Materials Fee:  Optional – $10 paid directly to Alissa for a pet jar of lichen dye to take home


Mordant Painting On Silk for Design with Alissa Allen

Blank silk scarves will be our canvas as we explore the possibilities of design using minerals such as iron and tannin to bring about color change in mushroom dyes. Learn about mordants and how they affect color as you play with stamped, and free form designs. Use leaves, paint brushes or twigs to make patterns, bring your own stamps, or make a potato stamp at camp!

Class Length:  3 hours

Materials Fee:  Please bring $10 to be paid directly to Alissa for a silk scarf.


Granny Square Hat with Alissa Allen

For the crocheters out there who don’t want to deal with math!  Learn how to make a lovely granny square hat that you can hook with your eyes closed!  Alissa uses this pattern exclusively because math is hard!  You must know the basic crochet stitch to take this class.

Class Length:  2.5 hours

Please Bring:  A few colors of worsted weight yarn and a G hook.
